The work is created about 1928, in a phase that the artist in a series of landscapes tries to give a synthesis of his rural environment. The restrict style of the 1920s is released and makes away for a free, more playful approach in warm color layers.
Usually Gust De Smet depicts oil on canvas, sometimes – as in this case – oil on cardboard. In such a case he signs with pen and ink (in black).
Handwriting research has shown that the tekst verso (vaches dans une drève – vers l’’etable) is of the hand of the artist himself.
